7 Lessons I Learned from My Daughter

Categories: Life

Next week, my daughter will turn 16. (Appause) Over the past 16 years, my daughter has taught me as many lessons about life as I hope that I have passed on to her.

Here are some of the things she has taught me.

  • Lesson 1: A hug and a kiss can go a long way in keeping one’s self out of trouble.
  • Lesson 2: They are not clones of ourselves no matter how much a like we may be.
  • Lesson 3: Tell the truth about everything all of the time,  including sex and drugs.
  • Lesson 4: Be a mom first and a friend second.
  • Lesson 5: Trust is not guaranteed just because you’re the parent, it has to be earned.
  • Lesson 6: Listening is a two-way street.
  • Lesson 7: You can never say “I love you” too many times.

Despite the crazy hormonal shifts, I think that my daughter is pretty great. She surprises me every day with some new insight or comment about the world. If I could only get her to stop picking on her brother, she’d be perfect.
